Day 19

Tuesday: On the road again...we planned on either getting home today or taking another day, depending on the driving fatigue. We had it all weatherwise today: snow, sun, clouds, wind, snow...yes the cars are dirty!

Our scenery today was as varied as the weather. Picture the Snake River, Powder River, Grand Ronde River and then to top it off, the Columbia River Gorge. Along the way we saw lots of windmills, feedlots, cattle, horses and lots of trucks.

We finish our Route 66 adventure with many special trip memories and treasured time with friends. 467 miles driven today.

Day 19 - We Are Home

There won't be a Blog tonight...we all arrived home safe and sound, but Gary and Kathy discovered a leak in the house when they got home. So, they are out of their house and in their 5th wheel for a "time". I don't think we will have Internet out there, so I will try to work on the blog in the next few days and post some final pictures. Thanks for following along with us.

Day 18

The road west went from Rock Springs, WY through Utah and into Idaho. Yes, it was a long day...about 450 miles. Enroute we saw landscapes that looked almost like the moon, snow fences, Little America (and no we didn't stop for the 50cent ice cream cones), windmills, sheep, horsescows, feed lots and antelope. We made one needed stop in Echo, UT for gas and there was no longer a gas station there. We almost thought we were on Route 66 again! Bob had to use his 5-gallon can and Gary had to use the outhouse! It seems that we were easily entertained today.

We made one stop at Ft. Bridger, WY to see the fort that was named after Jim Bridger. For those of you who don't know, Gary & Kathy's littlest grandson is named after Jim Bridger, so it was interesting, but very cold! Our outside tour was shortened a bit due to the weather.

We stopped for lunch in Brigham City, Utah and are staying tonight in Mountain Home, Idaho. It seems we are only about 8 hours from home. Our group is all ready to get home, but it is a good kind of ready to be home. It has been a very special trip for all of us. And no mechanical problems today!

Day 17 - May 2, 2010

Greetings from Rock Springs, Wyoming!

We drove I25 from N. Denver north to Cheyenne and then are traveling west on the Interstate. Well, it has been quite a weather-filled day: snow, hail, snow, hail...you get the picture.

But God has gone before us even parting the clouds. We looked in our rear view mirror at one point and it was totally black skies behind us, but things weren't too severe in front of us.

Isn't God good!

We flinched a few times when the big trucks spit some rocks on our vehicles, but so far no observable damage. One of the fun things about traveling in old cars, is we make friends easily. People have been stopping outside our motel rooms to talk to us about the cars and asking "what in the world are we doing in Rock Springs, Wy?

Sights for today were: antelope, some oil wells, gas pipelines, llamas, mountain ranges covered with snow and even snow right alongside the road. Oh yes, did I mention it was snowing off an on most of the day?

We stopped for lunch in Rawlins, Wy. We tried to stop at one restaurant and the desk said it was closing in 10 minutes, so she recommended a different place in Rawlins. Our group has a very nice and relaxing lunch at Sanfords Grub & Pub. The restaurant was filled with gasoline station pumps and signs and had very good food. It was a first for the ladies to have a restroom that was diamond plated and had a television!

Day 16

Long road trip day today. The blog will be short tonight because my notes for the day are in the car and I am not going out there to get them! Our route for the day was mostly off the Interstate highways so we got to see a bit more of "small town America".

We saw numerous cattle and feedlots...no wonder every restaurant has good steaks. Sights also included pheasant, llama, horses, and a number of dead deer on the road. One narrowly missed Gary & Kathy's car today.

The terrain changed quite a bit from the flat land of the Kansas prairie to the foothills of the Rockies. Denver even had patches of snow on the ground. Apparently, they are having spring weather...one day 80 and the next day snowing.

Our group was so looking forward to spending the night at Ted & Joan's daughter and son-in-law's house near Denver. But a family emergency called them away to North Dakota so we just "visited" their beautiful home briefly and dropped off a couple of things. We were disappointed along with them, but we got to meet their neighbor, Russ, and look for the hide-a-key. NOPE, we didn't find the key.

We are staying in a north suburb of Denver tonight and will continue up I25 I think and then head west of I80 tomorrow.

Ted and Joan did a great job of navigating. Many praises for safety in travel and weather. We are all just hoping that we don't get any surprise tickets in the mail when we get home for running rather "orange" stop lights. It can be difficult to follow in town with three cars trying to make the left hand turn lights! Gary is thinking it is a good thing he doesn't have a front license plate to show up in the stop light photos!
