Day 10 April 25, 2010

Route today was from Amarillo, TX to Clinton, Oklahoma. Yes, Ted and Bob both worked on their cars this morning. Bob & Donna brought the duct tape and baling wire, but they forgot to bring the bolts. The "adjustment" was for a shock bracket on Bob's pickup and Ted needed a new chrome piece for his tailpipe. All before 8:15 in the morning.

This was another "best day". The weather was sunny and we were on Route 66 most of the day. Route 66 stops and starts so we would run on a frontage road for a while, go across the overpass and then get on the S. frontage Road. It was almost funny. We ended up cheating a bit and ran the last leg on I40. They may fire me as Navigator. But honest, some of the Route 66 legs are "dirt 66 options".

We traveled through Conway, TX and into Groom, which boasts the largest cross in the western hemisphere at 195 feet. One of our favorite towns was Shamrock, TX. It has numerous remnants of old motels, cafes and stations. One of our Kodak moments was at the recently restored U-Drop Inn/Tower Conoco from 1936. It currently houses the Chamber of Commerce. Our next favorite was the Magnolia gas station nearby. On the way out of town, the guys were excited to see a huge junkyard of "projects".

With trepidation we stopped by Erick, Oklahoma. We stopped by the Sand Hills Curiosity Shop and it was closed. I think we were relieved as we had seen the owners on a Route 66 DVD. Sure enough, Harley and Annabelle, the "Mediocre Music Makers" came running and opened their shop and serenaded us. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. It was....well...an EXPERIENCE!
Then onto Elk City and our home for the night Clinton, OK.
