Day 7

April 22, 2010

We have been on the road one week today and yes, we are still friends! Gary and Kathy celebrated their 43rd anniversary today...traveling in a yellow & white 1955 Chev. That's the same way we spent part of our wedding day: on the road in a yellow & white '55 Chev!

The weather was still a little "iffy" when we left Williams, AZ this morning, but the roads were clear so we headed off towards Flagstaff, AZ. We didn't spend much time in Flagstaff, but traveled to Walnut Canyon and the Hopi indian cliff dwellings, where we had a great view with a bit of light snow.

Next stop was Winslow, AZ where we toured La Posada Hotel, a former Harvey Hotel. It is an amazing restored hotel and took us back to the height of the railroad era in the southwest.
Yes, we all did "stand on the corner in Winslow, AZ". In case you are too young, that was the town the singing group "The Eagles" sang about. I think it is called "Take It Easy". Our travels today reminded us of how devasting it was for this area when the Interstate Highway went through. It certainly does bring to mind the movie "Cars" when towns just died off. We did stop and check out the Wigwam Hotel in Holbrook, AZ.

There were black clouds of snow and rain all around us, but God just seemed to clear the way. The New Mexico scenery was awesome in spite of the weather. I think we only had to turn the windshield wipers on twice and made it safely to Gallup, New Mexico where we had an exciting evening of doing laundry and mapping out our next day. And yes, (shhhh) we did have pie a la mode for dinner tonight since we had a late lunch!

Thank you for traveling along with us and praying for our safety.

  1. Happy Anniversary! What a terrific way to spend your special day! We only wish your travels were taking you through southern Arizona instead of northern AZ, so you all could stop in Yuma and visit us. We would love that!
