Day 8

We left Gallup New Mexico this morning. It has been a bit of an adventure trying to stay on Route 66. Of course some of it is under the asphalt of I40. We got off the freeway early and loved the scenic route. We went through small towns including many like Prewitt, Bluewater & Grants. We were all looking forward to seeing the car museum in Grants, but a local told us it had been closed for about a year! The Interstates have passed these towns by and they are struggling. But everyone we have met has been helpful and excited to see our old cars and cheer us on our adventure. Bob thought we should buy a 400 seat movie theater which was for sale in Winslow. The guys would go fishing and the women could run the theater. NOT!

Today's highlights:
We seem to be missing the worst of the weather, but it could warm up a bit. We had snow showers east of Albuquerque and quite a bit of wind.
In Albuquerque we met Ted's sister, Vivian. She showed us around the quilt store where she works. Beautiful fabric and quilts! It was fun to meet her.

Midas Muffler. Oh yes, that wasn't a breakdown...it was maintenance! Yup, the '55 Chevy had an exhaust leak. Gary realized too late that he might have been able to fix it. But the car was repaired while we ate lunch.

We detoured off Route 66 and skipped Santa Fe today. Instead we are staying in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, which boasts the Route 66 Car Museum. Very nice cars! Good night from the Best Western Santa Rosa.

  1. Following your trip - what a great adventure! I think you'll be coming up on the Bates Motel and the Cadillac Ranch in the next day or so.
