Day 6

April 21,
2010

It is hard to believe we have been on the road for six days. Is there a Laundromat in our near future?

Last night we walked downtown to see the town of Williams, AZ. It doesn't take too long to see the town and the Quilt Shop was closed, so we just had dinner at The Pine Restaurant and walked back to our motel.

We took a day off from driving and took the train instead. Everyone was so looking forward to seeing the Grand Canyon, especially since it was a first time visit to the canyon for some of us. Well....did I mention it was hailing and starting to snow when we left our motel this morning? I think we were all glad we decided to travel by train today.
Grand Canyon: what a special place. Ummmm...we caught a glimpse of one side of it. It was fogged in and snowing all day. I thought we were at a ski lodge! We walked around the rim a very little bit and visited the lodges and Hopi House . People were walking around in shorts and business was booming for rain ponchos! We had a good time in spite of it...after all, we are on an adventure and with friends, you can have fun doing anything.
Have you ever thought this was a small world? In the gift shop at the El Tovar Hotel we bumped into Bob & Pauline Gaskill from Good Shepherd Community Church. They were on their way home from 5 months in the southwest. How fun to see them in an unexpected place.
On our train trip home we were entertained by a guitar playing singer, saw antelope, elk and deer. Our train was then held up by three bandits on horseback. Of course, we stopped the train to let them on!
The snowy/rainy weather is here for at least another day, so we will figure out our route tomorrow after we check the road forecast. As of tonight, we are heading for Flagstaff.
We'll keep you posted on our route 66 travels.
