Day 4
Day 4 took us from Barstow, CA to Kingman, AZ. Today truly epitomized Route 66 from the abandoned towns and service stations, bumpy roads, donkeys in the streets, motorcycles and a day filled with memories. We kept thinking we would see the "Hudson Hornet" from the movie cars, drive by at any moment.
Interestingly, we have each had somewhat different maps, which can make traveling "interesting". But we do have walkie-talkies in each of our cars. Ted was our fearless leader today and did a great job of navigating. The other two cars just drafted and took life easy. We did learn that when our Route 66 book says "bumpy road" it means bumpy road. Ya think? Bob thought the road was going to shake his car apart. Well you guessed it, the road was so rough that it vibrated Bob's gas pedal off. Our mechanics fixed it in a short time, of course.
We took a short detour to a place called Goff's to see a restored 1914 schoolhouse. This whole trip, God has gone before us, and sure enough the place was closed, but a volunteer came out and asked us if we wanted to go through the fence to see it? It was a dirt street filled with mining antiques, old cars and memorabilia. The volunteers and owner are bringing history back to this area.
Our evening was finished off with a picnic dinner in Room 101 at the Travelodge, followed by ice cream sundaes across the street at McDonalds. I think we covered all the food groups!
Stay tuned for Day 5 tomorrow.
